Latest City News: Entertainment District Proposal

Overview of the Proposal:

On aug 2, I presented the proposal below to create an entertainment district in downtown canton:

  • The proposed entertainment district shall allow the removal of alcoholic drinks from establishments holding a consumption on premises license. The drink shall be served in a plastic cup no larger than 16 ounces. A patron may only carry one drink on their person at any one time
  • An entertainment district may be adopted by the city council through this ordinance. The proposal is that the map will follow the current Historic Downtown Canton map / boundary which has already been approved by council through ordinance 6-211 (4)
  • Within the entertainment district, it shall be unlawful to carry an open container onto any property designated church, daycare center, or school.
  • Additionally, a private property or business owner may restrict a patron from entering any private property or business with an open container.
  • It shall be unlawful to carry an open container from any residential unit or from any vehicle, or to remove any open container from the district in a vehicle in accordance with open container law
  • Model will follow similar approach to the logistics that are currently provided on First Fridays for Downtown Canton and the Art and Wine Walk
  • Additional framework for modeling the ordinance language has been considered from the cities of Woodstock, Acworth, Dalton and Roswell
  • This entertainment district proposal will help to tie in the Canton Mill development with the existing Historic Downtown Canton business district
  • This proposal ties back to the #CantonForward initiative where residents asked for more opportunities while enjoying our existing retail shops and restaurant as well as creating opportunities for more shops and restaurants

this will be reviewed at the next council meeting (Thurs, 8/16) at 6pm.  Plan to attend or speak

My Vision for Canton is built on

The Potential for Sustainable Growth

As a Canton resident over the last 9 years and a business owner in the historic downtown area, I have been proud to call Canton my home.  Our city balances the charm of North Georgia with the development and growth of the metro area.  I have been active in the community and most recently have been a member of the Steering Committee for the city’s Canton 2040: Comprehensive Plan.  Through this committee, I have had the opportunity to work with residents and community leaders to identify the key areas for growth, which include:

  • Continue the progression of the Canton Forward initiative
  • Look for opportunities to grow businesses across the city, not only focused on the historic downtown area
  • Realize the full potential of the river and trail systems
  • Understand the future infrastructure needs to help the city grow sustainably

While the current leadership of our Mayor and many members of the City Council is strong, I believe that I bring a unique perspective to the City Council based on my experience and background as a business leader and finance executive.

Endorsments from the community...

For the last 12 years my husband and  I have not only valued Nick’s friendship, but we have also been able to watch his passion for our city grow! Nick is intelligent, efficient, professional, but his character is one of his finest attributes. His financial background along and his willingness to weigh tough decisions fairly and professionally make it easy to give him our vote!
— Jennifer Puckett, Music Therapist & Business Owner
I truly value the leadership that Nick brings to the workplace.  He is methodical and analytical and listens to all points of view. I know that he will continue lead and listen on the City Council.
— Clint Barnett, Canton Resident
I’ve lived with my family in Canton for 10 years and have loved seeing it grow. I’m lucky enough to know Nick Estes as an active neighbor in our community. I believe his fresh perspective and energy, combined with his business experience and proven commitment to Canton’s growth as a small business owner, make him an ideal candidate for our city council. I look forward to the positive impact he can have on the continued growth of our amazing city.
